I build each piece by hand, usually from marbled stoneware. The starting point is often a vessel, but not a fixed idea of how it should end. Cutting, folding and adding clay gradually pull the form away from the original plan. Once that happens, I work more by looking and responding than by trying to bring it back.

What interests me is the moment when clay stops reading simply as material and begins to resemble something else: a body, a landscape, perhaps an object with no obvious use. Seams, pressure marks and uneven edges stay visible because they are part of how the piece arrived there. Glaze and platinum are used in small areas, often to break the dryness and weight of the stoneware or to draw attention to a cavity, a fracture or an unexpected detail.
